Video Scavenger Hunt

This will be your first opportunity to use the video cameras and then edit your footage. You will be traveling around the school in your work groups to gather as many “shots” as possible. You will have a time limit so make sure you use your time wisely. It is also important that after you shoot something you change the videographer so that way everyone gets a chance to use the equipment.

Take a look at the example made for the Video Scavenger Hunt project. Make sure yours has a title, the names of your group members, and each shot has a caption. Your job is to beat 92 points! Good Luck!

Video Scavenger Hunt Sample (Medium) from Skyview Broadcasting on Vimeo.

1. Download and print the Scavenger Hunt Checklist.

2. Start shooting. It will be important for you to take notes and number which shots you shoot and in what order you did so that when you upload them to the computer to edit it will be easier.

3. After you are done gathering your footage, import your footage into iMovie and begin editing. Click here for a tip sheet on importing from Flip Cameras.

*You also may find this tip sheet of iMovie Shortcuts helpful when editing any project.

After writing a script, the next step is to storyboard your project. A storyboard will show what your project will look like visually. It should include a sketch of each scene and a quick description of the visual and audio components for the scene. We should be able to look at your storyboard and see who is in the scene and what camera shots you will be using.

Your Assignment

1. First look at this sample storyboard for the alligator attack story you watched last class. Notice how the audio reflects what’s being said and the visual describes what’s being seen. Also notice that there is a different box for every scene.

2. Now it’s your turn. Use this storyboard template and print off enough copies for your scenes (3 scenes fit on one page).

3. Using the script you wrote last class, create a storyboard for your news story. Every scene must be storyboarded. Remember to include both audio and visual descriptions. And NO STICK FIGURES!

This assignment introduces you to the concept of writing a script before going on camera. It is very important to have a plan of attack before beginning any project and a good script is essential to the planning stage.

Your Assignment

1. Watch the following news segment:

2. Read through the script example for the above clip. Notice how the script separates the audio, video and what character is present. Example Script – Alligator Attack

3. Now it’s your turn. Use the blank script template to write your own script for any news story that takes place at Skyview – it could be real or made up. Pay attention to what people are involved (Characters Column), what they are saying (Audio Column) and what camera footage is needed (Video Column). Turn in one script as a group.
